Horse Shoe by Emma Grant

We found this horse shoe at the side of the road. We put it on a bench at my house. We have had it for about 3 years now. We have put it up this way because it’s meant to bring you good luck and if you put it the other way around, it will bring you bad luck.

Tea pot by Emma Grant

This is an old tea pot that my Granny had and she had an idea to put flowers in it. When the flowers die, she will put new ones in it. She uses it a lot more now.

This is my dresser that I have at home. We put pictures on it but sometimes we put china cups, plates and tea pots on it also. We’ve had it for about 7 or 8 years. We bought it in England when we lived over there for 4 years. We brought it back for our new house, where we live in now.

Sacred Heart Picture and St. Brigid’s Cross by Rachel Barry

My Gran got this picture from the local priest.  It is signed by my Granny, Grandad and Daddy.  It has been there for 50 years.  The St. Brigid’s Cross was made by my Mammy for my Granny on St. Brigid’s Day.  It is tradition in our family to collect the rushes for the cross from our fields on our farm in Gortnacranna. It is said that it is bad luck to take the crosses down after they have been put up.

Weather Thermometer (and in the background a Holy Water Font)  by Rachel Barry

The thermometer belongs to my Grandad. He bought it in a auction from a thatched house. It is 13 years old . If you look in the mirror of this photo,  you can see the fuse box and under it is a holy water font.  Back years ago, people were  scared of the house going up in a flames so they put something holy beside the fuse box.

Altar by Rachel Barry

This is our Altar in my family home and we keep our holy water and our mass cards there.  One of the bottles of water is from Lourdes and the other is from Drom Church.  We used the holy water from Drom to shake on our fields.  We shake the holy water in the four corners of our fields for good luck. We also shake the water on our bales in the hay barn for good luck.

Pump by Aoife and Brid Ryan Rock

This pump would have been used a lot years ago by the family that lived in the house where I now live. This pump is about 50 to 60 years old. It would have been used for drinking water. The water would come from underground. The pump has stopped working in the last few years.  It is in Sean Ryan Rock’s field in Killoskehane.

Holy water font by Aoife and Brid Ryan Rock

This holy font is made of wood and is in our kitchen. You can get them in plastic too. You fill them up with holy water and dip your finger in it and bless yourself. It is believed that if you bless yourself you are kept safe. This is a Holy Mary water font. Our Granny has a white Celtic cross font. She has it at the back door so when she walks in she can bless herself. Our friend Emma has a one of Mary and baby Jesus in her arms. You can get them in all different holy designs.

Swallow’s Nest by Erin Mc Mullan

This swallow’s nest is at the side of my house. All the swallows are gone from the nest now. The winter in Ireland is too cold for them so the swallows fly back to South Africa. In spring the swallows come back to Ireland. Some move back into their old nests while more build new ones. I heard that people say it is bad luck to knock down a swallow’s nest.

The Pump by Emer O’Donnell

There is a pump in my Granddad’s farm. It is near the house and it was used by my Granddad when he was a little boy. There was no running water then so they had to use the water from the pump. It doesn’t pump out any water anymore as it is too old.
